Friday 21st to Friday 28th June. Camarinas, Food poisoning, concussion, hospital, and recovery.

On Friday 21st June, we took the dinghy into the sailing club and chatted with the crew of a 12m Catamaran, Merlin, that had sailed non-stop from North Britanny in just 48 hours.  As they planned to depart for the Azores on the following morning, we aimed to take their hammerhead berth.  We took our first look at the small town of Camarinas, and enjoyed a wonderful lunch of shellfish, sitting out in the sun at the Ave Del Mar restaurant

Saturday was a busy and long day.

Whilst still digesting breakfast we saw the French catamaran Merlin depart, and so raised the hook and tied up on the sturdy hammerhead berth of the Club Nautico Camarinas.  With access to water, we scrubbed the decks of all the salt and grime accumulated between Coruna and Caraminas, and took our washing to the laundry.

After lunch, and a little siesta, we set out to walk to Cabo Vilan lighthouse, a lovely 10km round trip through coniferous forest and rocky heathland.  On return, we shared a beer with another British crew at the sailing club and returned to cook shellfish on board.

Sadly, we both got food poisoning.

I collapsed inside the boat, struck my head and was concussed.  The Club Nautico called an ambulance, and after a 40 min journey I was admitted to hospital in Cee, for a hectic 24 hours of medical investigation, concluding with staples in a gash on my head, three fractures around my jaw and eye and several bruises.

But I would mend, with no lasting damage.  Liz sat up all Saturday night in the hospital, but we found a local hotel on Sunday, where Liz suffered her food poisoning alone, until I joined her near midnight.  We spent three nights recovering strength in lovely kind and caring hotels, and returned to our boat on Wednesday.

Kindness, love and friendship shine through in adversity.  We had many messages and prayers from friends and family: Liz’s brother offered to come out and help, Sam and Rose in Coruna offered to come and sail us back, and the Club Nautico looked after our boat.  We found this outpouring of friendship to be heartwarming, and a great comfort as we nursed ourselves back to fitness.
